Electrical Power & Power Systems

Power Plant and Power System

The course aims to build students' overall understanding of modern power systems and their key components. The content ranges from macro to specific and usually covers the following aspects: Firstly, it systematically introduces the types of power plants, the structure of power systems (including generation, transmission, transformation, and distribution), and their operation modes.

Programme overview

Build capability through relevant workplace practice

This programme can be shaped around participant experience, industry context and organisational priorities. Delivery combines clear instruction, discussion, cases and guided practice so learners can connect ideas to real work.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme, participants can:

Build an overall understanding of the power system: Master the entire process from power generation, transmission, transformation, distribution to consumption, understand the basic principles of different types of power plants (thermal, hydropower, nuclear, new energy), the functions of core electrical equipment (such as generators, transformers, switchgear), as well as the composition and operation mode of key systems such as main electrical wiring and plant power supply.Master core engineering analysis and calculation capabilities: Cultivate the ability to conduct power flow analysis in power systems, calculate symmetrical and asymmetrical short-circuit currents, and based on this, make preliminary selections and verifications of electrical equipment (such as dynamic and thermal stability verifications). This is the foundation for system planning, design, and operation analysis.Establish a systematic concept of safe, reliable and economic operation: Understand the basic principles and measures to ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system (such as relay protection, lightning protection and grounding), initially establish the concepts of power quality, operational reliability and economic analysis, and cultivate the engineering literacy to think and solve problems from the perspective of the entire system.
